    Hello everyone!

I have a nice easy project here but starting a course so no time at all to do it.

It is basically a redesign of the visuals of an existing site, with a tour area and a member area. The structure will stay almost exactly the same so not much work to do there at all, and php is used for creating updates, so not many different page layouts to design - the tour will probably be the most work, and all that really needs doing is making new images, putting them into the html/css, and working with the PHP thats already there. Its an adult site which personally doesnt phase me so long as it's not my job photoshopping the content haha (which it's not) but i understand it might do someone else.

Some thing i havent considered in detail before is outsourcing. There are a number of little projects I could take on (about 1-2 days work each and a couple more than that in worktime) but I have no time so was thinking about outsourcing them.

I wanted to get some input from people experienced in this or who know a bit more than me about places to find cheap yet reliable outsourcing - the deadline and basic functions of the site and valid code are most important here. If necessary i can tweak the visual design but dont want to be fiddling about with much else after its done.

Also any tips on what to make sure of, any paperwork to sign, or anything to avoid?

Help would be great or a reference to a thread/place that has this info [IMG]

put it in the job tenders here first, as there are some very talented freelancers on here, if that fails, google freelancers and then....
Find , test , evaluate, potential freelancers so to weed the rubbish from the skilled, and dont forget contracts and examples of previous work before letting someone else loose on your outsourced work.

Thanks sunburn - do you know what the contract may look like? Im thinking it should ensure privacy of the client and not to display their work or link to it without notifying of course, and standard copyright terms, but i dont know if it would be different from a general non outsourced webdesign contract or there should be extra/fewer terms included.

if i understand it right, you are outsourcing this work as you cannot do it yourself, therefore your acting as the middle man, in this case the contract the freelancer has will be with you and you only (recommended) so your contract not only needs to cover you and your customer but you and your choice of freelancer. If you not intersted in managing the project, I would suggest giving the project or suggesting to the client a recommended peer so that they can still get the work done and you still remain professional.

as for the ins and outs of your contract you will need to protect yourself and your clien firstmost and formost, depending on your client you amy wish to divulge that you are using a 3rd party to provide the solution to your client, however they then may just want to work with that person only so depending on your relationship with your client and how you wish to be precieved that choice will dictate what route you go down, the points you have already thought about are valid and should be considered.

me persoanly I would manage the project as if it was my own and the freelancer would have little or non exsposure to the client. If the freelancer needs to know of the client then every thing needs to go through you, every email communique the lot, and your contract with the freelancer should state these types of conditions.

therfore I think it basically boils down to two options,

    1. you manage the project and feed the details to the freelancer on an as is basis.
    2. you dont manage the project and give another the job and leve them to sort out the ins and outs with your client.

    I hope this helps.

I think id be most happy with this way and i wouldnt really want the freelancer talking to the client - would just complicate things and may make the client feel wary that I'd just got any old random person to do their job for me (which i guess is the case haha however id look at their work and probably go to a little company for outsourcing now rather than a single person - seems safer)

So given that, do you think 'standard' web design contracts (by that i mean nothing else specific to outsourcing) between me and the freelancer is all that is required?

Bit of an assumption Emma, I wouldn't dis-count one person companies, and for the flexibility you're after for outsourcing you'll probably find a freelancer to be far more flexible than company setups.

Like Geoff said, if you're going to manage the project and the client will not be in touch with the designer/outsourced person at all, you'll need some terms/conditions in the contract that stipulate all contact must be through yourself, ie not direct with client, and that the work can not be included in their portfolio once completed, etc.

I'd agree with Greg on the single person business, most of the main web desginers on this site are single person businesses for their freelance work (although some work in a business too) iirc.

I'd also put that a larger business can cause more issues than a smaller one as you may be dealing with more than one person. One of the strong selling points of a single person business is that you're always dealing with the same person :)

If you are really planning to outsource, you need to know the basic steps on how to do it. What and when to outsource are the basic and initial steps to consider. If it does not affect your business directly, then you can outsource it but if it is the core of your business, then it's not advisable to outsource it.

Getting the right providers should also be considered. Don't take advantage of the cheap rates - you know you get what you pay for so don't expect so much if you prefer them. Interview them carefully so both of you will understand each other.
