External HDD Vanished. Need a little help

So i was plodding along and went to save an InDesign file and then my HDD crashed and decided to say that it was empty.

I have heard about creating a DISK IMAGE or ISO file. Kind of like time machine but in 1 file that can be moved about.

Turns out you have to buy software to be able to do this.

Anyone know a way to create a file that can be used to restore flakey HDD's without software

on a mac!
