Design Magazine Subscriptions

Hey everyone,

I've been regularly buying both .net magazine and Computer Arts, seems to be one month .net the next CA, and am now finally thinking of getting a subscription to one to make it a bit cheaper, which would you go for?

Does anyone else have any magazine subscriptions? My old workplace used to get Creative Review but I think I would prefer something more web design based with more hands on content, like tutorials, site makeovers and reader content, etc.

Thats pretty much the same as me. I also by Computer Arts Projects which has some really good stuff in it, although it tends to be based on a specific subject.

This months Computer Arts has an awesome article in with my good bud Gav Strange. He got 7 pages the luck bugger!

We get computer arts every month to the office, although I want to get a more web design related one as well, so maybe "web designer" or computer arts projects.

Yeah I grab CA Projects every so often but my local newsagents doesn't have it in every month. I've got the October edition of CA just had a quick look through but couldn't see Gav Strange/Jam Factory in there, is it in the November edition? As I know they come out very early!

Web Designer is another one I pick up occasionally, got the most recent one as it had a big feature on Wordpress and a few free WP themes on the CD!

.net is a nice read - i have had a sub for 4 years now.

Its a lot better than it used to be with some very interesting articles and tutorials

Yeah I agree Mike, .net has really come on.
Will have to try and grab a copy of that one Lee, looks good :)

Im subscribed to Computer Arts and buy the Projects one whenever it really interests me. Can't justify subscribing to both when the CAP doesn't always have what Im interested in for £7!

We mainly buy Computer Arts, Computer Arts Projects, Creative review etc...

Nice to see some of our work in there from time to time :)

I subscribe to CA and pick up CAP most weeks. I find .Net a bit too technical for my tastes, but web designer is a bit hit and miss too.

I find Creative Review a bit too pretentious for my tastes though.

In my humble opinion, any graphic designer worth their salt should read Eye magazine cover to cover every quarter. Admittedly it's more print orientated than web, but there are often pieces on art direction and design for the web, which are always fascinating. It's not the cheapest on the shelf, but it's absolutely worth every penny and some.

Check it out, you can read a lot of the articles/essays online: http://www.eyemagazine.co.uk/home.php

I promise I don't work for them.

I've just today subscribed to web designer, which has a lot of good stuff, and a lot of crap.

Last time I bought .net though, I had 26 pages in a row (and more elsewhere) of ads, yet they still insist on £6 a month.

I bought web designer today and it's got loadsa freebies tho, if anybody cares :D

Yeah that is the only problem with .net, especially where they have the 1&1 ads all blocked together!

Yeh i know! It's totally stupid.

And the thing is, as web people, we just pay no attention to them! They're wasting like a gazillion squid.

I'm subscribed to CA and CAP for several years now, and they never fail to dissapoint.
I end to just buy other mag's such as .Net, Design Week sporadically, if they have a particular article/subject of interest.

Oo and with the discounts myfavouritemagazines.co.uk is always giving out, I got my lad a subscription to Classic Ford magazine. So everyone is happy :D heh

I often buy Advanced Photoshop. But I'm thinking of subscribing to either .NET or Web Designer as I'd also like a more web orientated magazine.

I used to be an art editor at Future (who publish Computer Arts and .net, though I didn't work on these two) so I'm a bit biased in saying they're both good. If you have any suggestions to improve them then email the mag teams – we used to be really open to comments from readers, the whole ethos is to make the mags that the readers want.
I find Creative Review a bit annoying... and why is there always someone naked/something about porn in it? I have to tear bits out before my small children look at it... (Bet you're all gonna subscribe now!)
There's a USA pdf/print mag called Before & After (Before & After magazine) which has some lovely projects and sound design theory. May not be aimed at web designers but I guess would still be of use. I have yet to subscribe, but as soon as my CR sub expires I will be.

Hi Lula,

That's good to know, and I'm biased with .net as I got one of my site designs featured in their readers' sites section last year :D

I've tried contacting all the design related magazines to see if we could get any coverage for the forums but haven't had any interest, I guess this comes down to the fact that the majority, if not all of the magazine titles have their own forums. Despite the fact they are often running out-dated forum software, I guess it would be against their ethos to mention another forum?

Cheers,
Greg
