CSS Opacity Function

I saw this blog whilst searching for blog inspiration, and couldn't help but notice the hover he has uses opacities to great effect.

I googled it and found this tutorial, albeit 3 and a half years old, but very useful for something I wasn't sure was possible.

Mandarin Design: CSS Opacity and Transparency

If you know of any easier opacity tricks then please let me know, I'd love to hear them!

My trick is to use a semi transparent png as a background image. To get around IE i use this jQuery script which, unlike the other fixes, tiles background images.

This works a little better than moz-opacity I find because it keeps my CSS clean.
