Creating metallic type

I've been asked to work on a pitch for a film of the dark fairytale/fantasy variety where the title treatment is key... they are after something along the lines of:

I've never quite figured out how to create high quality metallic type of this calibre, i've only ever used Photoshop effects like Bevel and Emboss but the results are always a little cheap looking. Am i missing a trick here and do these film companys use anything other than Photoshop to create their title treatments?

If anyone can offer some advice or point me in the direction of a good tutorial for this kind of thing that'd be great! I really need this to be of a very high-quality!

Thanks

That Harry Potter (and I suspect Stardust too) is a 3D rendered image done in a CAD package, its straight (maybe different camera angle though) from the bit used during the intro and then overlayed in photoshop.

Failing that, font goes into illustrator, turn it into outline then create a 3d version of the font and work from there. Not an easy route, but will give you crazy control over it!

Yeah if you don't import 3d text then if you wanted to be extremely detailed overly specific then you can do as mrp says above, if you take 3d text into photoshop you can work on each surface of the letters individually to create the EXACT look you are going for. Long winded and painfull but could be worth it if that's what you're after!

take note new fish! other new fish has spoken!

actually now I think about it you can map files onto a 3d render in illy, there is no way it is going to be up to the standard of 3dsmax or solidworks, but it might be alright.

you can in photoshop extended too, but the quality is rubbish compared with a true 3D render, the lighting etc is just so unbelievably limiting

I don't doubt it! I've seen what most of the 3d programmes can do. The enviroment mapping is insane!
