Cover Letter - Help Needed

I need to write some cover letters to send out along with my CV. I'm just hoping someone could point me in the right direction!

I will obviously be tailoring each one to suit the agency I send it to, but am struggling with the basics of what to write.

Does it have to be formal?
What key information should I include?
Do you write about yourself, or why you want to work for them?

Any help / pointers will be appreciated, thanks.

What I'd do:

Write the letter in the same style as what they wear... if they all are in suits, very formal, if they are all in tshirts and jeans, alot less formal, if it looks like they don't change there clothes, I'd not apply ;)

All the key information that might get you an interview. A good tip I was told, put everything you can think of in, then take everything that wasn't needed out.

Write about yourself & why they should hire you. Surely both the same thing though... No point telling them you go out twice a week with the lads... Make it relevant, informative and inspiring. They want to see your personality, even in a formal letter
