Cant decide on hosting :(

Hey,

I personally use a UK based company called Openmind Hosting, I found them through various business forums where their reputation was top notch. Been with them for 3 or 4 months now and not had any problems at all, great service, UK based, and the owner is actually a member here, a real person to talk to about your hosting!!

I'm with the Silver reseller package they offer which is £20/month, whilst it was a bit of a jump upto what I was paying for my previous hosting (which was US based) IMO it's worth it, knowing that it's UK based and I have the support there when I need it. This very site is running on Openmind hosting :)

It gives me the cPanel controls I need, and the ability to let clients run their own hosting accounts with cPanel access if needed.

Hope that helps!
Greg

Ummmmmm That could be a handy help for Coldfusion hosting.

Who is the user on here to speak to? Am getting quotes at the moment for a rather large project i am involved in at the moment.

Would be Coldfusion Reseller incase user reads this and wants to contact me.

Cheers

Craig

@openmind - Hi thanks for your email.

The services you provide are really interesting and looks like someone who i will sign up with. I assume that for each domain i sent up the user will have their own cPanel account, right ?

Do you use the latest version of cPanel ? i notice that on your site you promote plesk ? is this something you can have instead of cPanel ?

Look forward to your reply.

Many thanks

Shane

Hi Shane,

The Linux resellers get access to both cPanel and WHM. The latter will allow you to create user accounts granting access to cPanel for your users. It's the latest version of cPanel/WHM we run. You may also want to look at WHMCS - The Complete Client Management, Billing & Support System which is an excellent billing platform for management of the accounts. We use it ourselves for all our customers.

The Plesk control panel is only offered as an option for dedicated server orders, all Linux shared/reseller accounts go onto cPanel :)

We have a range of Linux shared or reseller plans that should be absolutely fine for you. We are based in the UK, in the Blue Square data centre in Maidenhead, and we only talk geek if you really want us to

Phil,

I'm looking for a Linux reseller package that's affordable. I'm moving away from Fasthosts (as an employee, I'm given a generous staff discount but some account limitations, but my last day working for them is looming quickly).

Open Mind Hosting looks like by far the best featureset for the best monthly price in the market. I'm surprised I've not heard of you before - but then again the less you spend on cold marketing, the lower your prices can be.

Anyway, just wanted to say expect a signup from me in a few days! Thanks for posting on these forums, otherwise I may not have found you!

No problem at all Scott :)

Probably the main reason why you haven't heard of us is simply that we rely on word of mouth and online forums such as DF for new business. Not only does this cost us next to nothing but it also means we increase our customer base on quality rather than quantity.

Softly, softly, catchy monkey and all that ;)

Just to add to this thread, whilst I recommended Phil/Openmind as I use them personally, I know from my experience on other forums that Flint Hosts and CS New Media also have a great reputation with support & reliability, so I'm sure any of the three companies mentioned in this thread will be a good option for hosting! ;)

Just signed up and encountered my first problem. Submitted a support ticket and it was resolved within 40 minutes. So far, jolly impressed!

Actually, the support email came from a "Phil" ... was that you? (about custom DNS records)

have you had a look at 123-reg.co.uk or streamline.net? I'm on the latter atm because they seem to be the cheapest, but 123-reg has better packages and service.

Yep that was me. Sorry it took so long to reply, I was grabbing a coffee ;)

Thanks for signing up btw and if you have any questions or problems then just shout...

Streamline.net is Fasthosts. 123-reg screwed me over a domain many years ago and I don't trust them even a tiny bit anymore.

That doesn't sound too good Scott? I've got all of my .co.uk names with them as I've never had any problems, what was the issue with your domain if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks,
Greg

I guess it was partially my fault, but they weren't helpful. My CC expired and I couldn't log in to my account to renew a domain name. But because my email on the account was actually on the domain that expired, I couldn't get any password reminders or anything through.

They needed a fax of my driving licence or passport before they would even talk to me - I didn't have either, nor access to a Fax machine (this was several years ago now).

So the only option was to let the domain expire and re-register it. As it happens, the domain was automatically bought by one of these domain watcher scripts and I never got it back.

So yeah, I guess I was to blame a little - but a bit more help on their part may of been nice.

Actually Scott to be fair I think this is the norm for anywhere or it should be anyway, and it reinforces the fact they will look after your domains and not let anyone apart from you have access, I would actually say they were just doing there job correctly...

I can see from their point of view - but surely there must have been something else. If I didn't have the two bits of ID they needed, the only other option was brick wall?

It's tricky I know, but at the time it was very frustrating and even though that kind of problem will never happen again (for a start, my "domains" email address is @gmail.com, and I now have a passport & driving licence), it has left me with some bad vibes.

But again driving license or passport are the only two viable ways of proving your identity, otherwise anyone can take control of anyones domains if they allowed other forms of unofficial ID. What about if you were buying alcohol, they wouldn't take any exceptions?
