Advice please, wordplay brief.

I've just been set a brief to do with wordplay, phrases and figures of speech.
The general idea is to end up with a book designed in vain of an artist whom uses alot of wording in their work.

Basically i have a few ideas, researched a few designers so far but i was wondering if anyone knows of any designers or artists who directly use figures of speech in their work.

Thanks.

I can't offer up an artist who specializes in this kind of thing but this is basically the old board game/80s newspaper puzzle 'Dingbats', isn't it?

I was thinking along the lines of Tim Vine*... verbal puns illustrated.

Eg;

Nuclear submarines for supper. (Fission ships.... fish and chips)

Played for a policeman's wedding yesterday. His colleagues clapped along to Mamma Mia - rather accurately. Good to have so many bobbies on the beat....

Sam Winston does some great typographic art with stories.

Also, look into visual poetry/concrete poetry (got some on my Pinterest board). These are also sometimes referred to as 'typestracts', and are poems that focus on the placement of type to create meaning, rather than the actual content.
