I know a screen printer that has done this sort of thing before. If it's what I think you are after?
PM'd you details.

Ugh, plastic business cards? And a thousand of them? What a bad idea, environmentally-speaking.

Depends if they looked like -

Then it might be worth it.

It's never worth it. Sure, it might have a good first impression, but no business card should outlast the designer themselves.

It's 2010, not 1910. Every single designer (and indeed every single person) has a responsibility to protect and conserve resources, not squander them. Plastic business cards are the complete opposite of responsible design.

I feel quite strongly about this sort of thing. Coincidentally, I also left a quite negative comment on Philip Lester's (Dreamten) blog regarding his plastic cards way back in 2008. After emailing him to find out why, he told me he didn't want clients to see any negative comments about them.

Berry, please consider an alternative and sustainable method of promotion.

plastic can be recycled in just the same way as card so I'm not sure what the issue is on that front. If anything a plastic one will be given to people who are more likely to keep the business card than throw it away like people do with card ones. Unless you're getting your business cards from a place that ensures it's using recycled/sustainable resources then it could be worse for using card ones.

Berry I know of at least one company that does do this but I've not used them, they also do metal options. I can give you a link if nothing comes up here if you want.

Before World War 3 breaks out...
I just need 1000 plastic Discount Cards, (credit card shaped/size) for a promotion.
Regarding sustainabilty issue, sorry.... I don't live in hut in a forest That whole environmental area issue doesn't work for me. Count me out.
I suppose you all have credit cards in your wallets?

Yes, I have a credit card but I didn't develop/design it.

Anyway, I don't mean to come off as preaching. It just irks me when this topic comes up because we as designers have a responsibility to develop better methods of advertising.

Hope you find what you're looking for.

Credit cards are made out of plastic for specific reasons, do your cards really need to be made out of plastic Berry?

Yes. It's what the client has requested, and it's what I get paid to do. It's called business.
I'm not in business to change the world, nor am I responsible for that change. That's why vote in our goverment.

The topic of responsibity as designers is an interesting one.
Why don't you open a new thread on that with a poll.
It would be a good separate disccusion point that would involve forum views.:)

I'm not directing this to Berry of course, he's just doing what his client requests. However, I would hesitate to have plastic business cards and just as a neutral comment, I hate to say it but they would probably be looked at unfavorably in many circles? As not being "green" enough. Isn't that why they are pushing "green" cars with the hybrid models? And I think the difference with credit cards is that those are kept for several years by the person it is issued to. Of course they still contribute discarded plastic eventually I suppose.

Thats why I would be for electronic business cards, which I'm sure people already use. Nearly every business out there now has a company e-mail probably and they all communicate electronically with each other anyway. Of course not to take away the personal and human aspect of networking, I suppose for the face to face meetings you'd still want something to give them for contact. :D

....I must remember to point out to the client that that the reason she has to look for a new agency is that I'm doing the environmentally friendly thing and saving the planet because of my green responsible conscience. It's also not the client requested but also what I suggest as the best method to achieve her objective. Remember 'Objective?' its what designers do - achieve objectives. Not cleanse the world.
Jeez, get your fingers out of your arses and wake up to the real world. I've never heard so such pretentious self indulgent rubbish for ages. It's a freeking PLASTIC CARD! not the burning of the Rainforests or Kiddie Porn.

Just because everyone moaning seems to have kind of missed this

ie a card that will need to be used multiple times. Paper will be of no use in this instance and I don't know many people going to throw away a discount card so it's not like its more rubbish

I suppose you could suggest the mobile phone approach (ie image on phone) but then thats not what the client wants :)

Why don't you get recycled plastic business cards?! ha only joking... I agree with you Berry, it's only a small thing and not really bad like yeah "kiddie porn". Maybe people should try out the carbon emissions calculator and see who's the worst culprit for not being environmentally friendly!

I agree with Berry on this. Plastic can be recycled and its better that the plastic gets used into business cards than putting it in a land fill somewhere.

What would you prefer. Milk bottles in land fill or milk bottles made into business cards?

Im in your corner on this one Berry. Why should Berry maybe lose a client for the sake of 1000 plastic business cards. We are supposed to help each other not rant at people, even if we dont agree fully with what others are doing.
