Choosing a Pantone colour guide?

Dear all,

I'm new to all these pantone colour guides. I've been working as a print designer for 2 years now and everytime I had something printed the colours were just a lottery whether it was right or not. My printer suggested I get a pantone guide. I've been looking online for them, but heard so many bad reviews about the pantone plus that it is really off putting. Could somebody tell me if there is any difference between the old versions of the pantone guide and the plus ones? I only need matt colours so would it be easier if I just got one of the older editions? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Sian

PANTONE PLUS is basically just over 220 new solid colours to the existing PANTONE range, it also has a few new tools as far as designers are concerned, I believe CS5.5 has the PANTONE PLUS library installed. We have just ordered a load of new PANTONE books and they're all PLUS ones.

I've just checked our PLUS books against the older PANTONE books and there is no difference, other than these colours. If I remember correctly our new set of books was around £70 and that was for both a coated and uncoated book. I doubt you could buy the coated or uncoated seperately although I could be wrong!
