Hello, I'm new at Graphic Design

Hello and welcome to the forums @Radavies95 :)

Nice to have someone here who is committed to learn graphic design. I think the commitment can take you far. It would be interesting to know your background. What made you decide to get into graphic design?

Hello, thank you for posting. I've always been the creative type of person, always drawing or writing stories. I studied art and film at school and went on to college to study film and photography. Over the years I kept changing my mind on what I wanted to do and go into. At the start of 2017, I looked into book cover designing and really enjoyed the creative storytelling visually side of things. I thought I'd push to get some work experience and learn more and improve. That's when I learnt about graphic design and what it was. I learned the elements and principles, some history and all the job roles of a graphic designer. There is so much to learn, I won't get bored, haha. It keeps thing interesting, and I get to keep creating. I think I have been teaching myself fully for about 5 months now, but I have learnt so much and the more I learn the more I want to keep learning. Every piece of work I do I improve every time, so I think I'm going in the right direction.

You have an interesting story. It's evident that you have a passion for what you do and that I think will take you far. It's impressive that you are self-taught and that you have learned a lot during such a short time. I also like you attitude where you improve your work every time you learn something new because that's a perfect opportunity to practice and implement what you have learned. I'm sure you're going in the right direction :)

Thank you! :D Hopefully all the hard work will one day pay off! :D

hey, i started out teaching myself - i cant stress how valuable it is to get yourself on a course. I did a two day (weekend) course on using illustrator and it really blew my mind open it was the springboard and now i work as a graphic designer for a large company in London, it was the best thing i did graphics wise - id recommend it, you can always start freelancing as soon as you get out of it to earn the cash back!
since then, ive done all the youtube stuff to stay current, been on a couple of week long adobe masterclasses for indesign, aftereffects and a few years really mastering the software. i always feel the software is fairly intuative, you need to really understand output to be able to produce work for people - its great to be able to do something cool in indesign, but if you dont know how to output it then youre going to have headaches.

Thank you for the advice! I'm actually going back to college in September to do a two-year foundation course, it includes live briefs and work placement so it'll help me a hell of a lot. I am also looking up starting my own freelancing part-time to help gain experience, learn on the job and help me through college. The course is full time, but only 3 days a week (no idea why they think that is full time, lol) so it'll give me plenty of time to learn and push myself.
