Help updating an old logo.

My friend who owns a restaurant chain gave me an opportunity to give a try in Logo designing. The job is pretty simple to explain, update their 12 year old logo. But when coming to details of his requirement, it's not that easy. He wants a noticeable change in the logo, but not so much that it's unrecognizable. Coming to the existing logo, it's a fairly simple one with a brand name on the bottom, letter B above it and a chef's hat on top the letter B. As a rookie logo designer, creating a new logo would have been an easier job than updating one. I am having a hard time finding ideas. Today, I read this blog: http://www.clubink.ca/blog/logo-design/tips-for-your-brands-logo-design/ and it mentions about updating the logo. I read that even updating the font will have a subtle but distinguishable change in the logo. I am not looking to grab someone else's idea here. But as a newbie, I would be grateful if someone could suggest some possible ideas.

Post some of your ideas and we can give feedback. However, ideas really should come from you. It's easy for anyone to update a logo to how they see fit.

However, what does the client want? What do they like, what don't they like? They want new colours, or keep the colours? Do they want a new font? Do they like the composition, or is it outdated?

After reading your post I have some suggestions for you, yes you can give different look and feel to the logo by just changing the font. But you should take this decision after analyzing clients requirement. Go a detailed brief, if what you said is the brief you received from your respective client than focus on some of the question suggested by @hankscorpio.

And first share your ideas and thoughts on what you have though to modify the logo. Depending on those options we can suggestion you some improvisation.

It's difficult for us to offer suggestions without seeing the original logo, but I understand it might be
awkward to show it. As Hank says, show us some ideas and we can offer advice.

My personal thoughts, for someone owning a CHAIN of restaurants, he should be hiring a professional.

to catch fresh idea, you can visit some logo gallery website like logopond, etc. You can search your category or keyword on their website. Sometimes, I get good ideas with practice this trick
