I haven't used twitter so far to drive business. But yes the groups on Linkdin are a great source to find and target your niche. If people gets impress by your work, they might expect some good results.

There are many tools providing you ranking stats but none of them is reliable. Also, forums users are served results by different Google datacenters, so they aren't that perfect either. I prefer to look my keywords in search engine itself by deleting the cahe and using "&gl=countrycode&" in the url.

I would suggest you to add it ASAP. According to the recent updates, Google is including "+1's" as ranking signals. It may not be such a major factor for ranking the site, but even if it adds a little to ranks, its worthwhile to be on the site. Good Luck.
