    Been using the Google Font API, myself. (Google Font Directory) I keep looking at TypeKit, but not sure the powers-that-be at my job actually 'get' the whole @font-face thing yet.

    It's painful :( Good thing is, I'm running this machine into the ground (it just can't cope with an actual designer using CS4 on it) and putting together a list of "reasons to give the designer a mac".

    This. Espresso is a great bit of software. I just wish my work would let me use a Mac (stuck on their Windows Dell PCs right now) so I could use it here as well as at home.

    I have a BTEC National Diploma in Graphic Design, and a degree in an unrelated subject. All I can say is be persistant, keep working on your portfolio, and don't be shy - be cheeky when it comes to asking people to give you a chance to do some work experience/paid internship and that sort of thing!
