Social media marketing - does it work?

It works but it's harder to do well than many advice articles/blogs online would have you believe, you need to commit time to it, focus on a network that works with your kind of business, have a clear strategy to engage a targeted audience and appreciate that it is a slow build approach, the...

    Search Engine Optimisation

Totally agree, the original poster said nothing about niche, quality etc. directories, he said post everywhere to any directories, really, directories should be seen as a place to build human traffic rather than great SEO resources I think, same with social networks for the moment at least. I...

Funny list of annoying things clients say to graphic designers

Some classics so far. The majority of my facepalm moments are more like hair pulling and lie in the vagueness of design requests, stuff like "it needs more pzazz" or "it just needs to be a bit different from everyone else, but not too different it has to fit into the industry", they drive me...

Which Software to start learning first

Have to say I only find SEO gets confusing when there are lots of changes and forums/blogs are clogged with people dishing out poor or out of date advice, there has always been a foundation of "white hat" techniques which have always worked and probably always will (good on page keyword density...

    Search Engine Optimisation

If it's your forte you should know that getting backlinks "anywhere" is a terrible strategy, quality is so important now. Do not use directories or PR sites, most will worsen your page rank. Quality blog commenting, guest posts and forum posts are all fine for backlinks and will improve PR over...

So. Who's seen the new EAT logo

Bland and derivative, how many thousands of websites, blogs and student portfolios have this look? It was fresh two years ago, total fail. Wish I could land some of these contracts, charge tens of thousands and churn out any old crap.

    Help Me!!!

Had a quick look, you're really lacking in "on-page" keywords, eg; "Harlequin Studio are a international award winning Photo Illustration and Graphic Art studio based in Liverpool, England. Using a hybrid alchemy of digital and alternative processes, we bring images and dreams to life." Where...

    Xmas Slowdown?

Xmas season always dead quiet here, people are too busy trying to wind up for the year, have spent budgets on seasonal offline campaigns, just can't be bothered making decisions etc. It usually picks up towards the end of January for us.

    Web safe fonts

Genuine question, why do people hate Arial so much? I don't think it's amazing or anything but I don't hate it, and it and helvetica are very similar.

    New Myspace

Makes sense! A few people have said to me they like the new design, will have to check it out. Loved Myspace in the early days it was a great promotion platform.

    New Myspace

What made you decide to go on there? Impression I've had is that it's going to focus on being a music discovery network, so just wondering why a graphic studio would need a profile on there? Honest question not sarcasm!

    paying yourself?

I think I understand the question; I'm not sure how sending an invoice is a "business expense" for BI so I assume you mean the cost of the actual printing is an expense (inks, paper, electricity)? Either way, you definitely need two separate books for the two companies, it's largely irrelevant...

Do I have to pay taxes if I earned less than £2000 last year?

The threshold is higher now, about 7000, and going up each year because the Lib Dems want it at £10k. So, you don't have to pay tax, but you may still have to pay National Insurance if you paid it to yourself all in one month or just a couple of months, NI is calculated monthly not yearly...

Changing resolution of an image for print

For print 300dpi is generally considered the minimum, but you can get away with less, like posters which are generally viewed at a bit of a distance look OK down to about 225, things definitely start looking crap at 200 though. I would use Photoshop too.
