That totally depends in my oppinion. For example, a simple portfolio with a showcase, about page and contact options doesn't really need one. But bigger sites, such as communities, corporate sites etc, that have a lot of subpages could use one. It totally depends the "width" of the site itself...

You can have pretty much anything in a footer... The navigation, sitemap, contact options, disclaimers, pullquotes, photos, social media links, quick information about you / the company / the blog / etc... Check these articles on over at SmashingMagazine. Footers In Modern Web Design...

I haven't done anything in that sort of field but I find it most interesting! Going to be good to see how it all turns out in the end!
