This will probably ruffle a few feathers on this site but I predict a big back lash against Apple from 'creatives' this year as they've gone for making consumer products and are leaving out...
Graphic design is neither business nor art - it is communication at it's most fundamental, it is about information first and foremost, not profit.
Advertising uses graphic design to sell things but that doesn't define what graphic design is.
What goods are sold by well designed signage and...
Influence through visual communication is the objective of the designer sales benefit from this.
I disagree about going for the lowest common denominator that's why there's so much trite, safe and boring design in the world.
The above definition is about right for me, but also remember it's one of the earliest forms of Human communication pre dating written language by thousands of years.
I think this year is going to be the end of the brand, (or at least less visibility) going hand in hand with the distrust in large corporations generated by the economic crisis. This isn't a doom and gloom view just expect things to be a lot less blatant in execution.

For me it's the Sun - yup the big glowing yellow disc in the sky bringer of light and life. It must be the most symbolised object in human history.
