What is your favourite project management or job tracking software and why?
I currently use a whiteboard (yes don't shoot me) it's very effective, but I'm really open to listen to what is out there and why it would be better.
Thanks so much!
I would agree with the lawyer. Unless it is a substantial sum of money, put it down to experience.
Even with larger amounts of money I've found you have to invest LARGE to get anything back.
Sigh. Lawyers. ;)
Have you done video before?
I would suggest a short course to see if it is something you really want to do. Video is expensive to invest in compared to graphic design and the timeframes involved in developing any video is massive and very intense.
I've done a fair bit of video in the last year...
You don't know what you don't know eh?
I would just ask what are your goals with your business. What motivates you? Why are you starting out on your own? I would also be doing a business plan and a marketing plan. Most governments have templates that you can use. This is a very good way to...
Well Done! It's a big jump to go out on your own! Depending on where you are AIGA in the USA have some good standard contracts.
I have a design brief on my blog that you are welcome to lift and use for yourself if you need too. Best to do any brief face to face if you can. You will build...
Your local graphic design association will have alot of free resources for you.
AGIA in the USA
D&AD in UK
AGDA in Australia. (where I am)
There is also an assortment of blogs out there to help noobs like yourself.
I agree with another commentor, get a good accountant as soon as you can...
I wouldn't do anything unless they gave you at least 50% in advance.
900 quid is way too cheap. I would be charging a page rate of at least 1/2hr to 1 hr per page at whatever the going rate for freelancing is where you are.
mflo, It took me a year and a half to get my 1st graphic design job in 1991. I haven't looked back since then.
I would say persistence is the key. Stick at it. Looking that is ;-)
I would do the cold calling asking for feedback on your folio regardless of the success rate. You never know you...
ohhh the name question! this is always the toughest!
My partner and I spent a month deciding on this until we ended up on a name that reflected the two of us. I don't think having a business name is a huge negative even if it is just you. As long as you don't pretend to be something you are...
Danny,
Nice work!
I blog to help young designers who are just starting out thrive in business. check out my blog and you'll find how I find my clients. There are some easy ways to do it without spending lots of money.
bottom line really is to actually put yourself into places with the...
Good on you Jim lad! I don't have a problem with pre-existing portfolio sites. As long as it is easy for prospective clients to use and see that is all that matters.
Great question Russell.
I'm not sure if that is a good reason to go for a retainer. If you've been working for a year for them and you are doing good work then just keep going!
I've done retainers before and unless you are all over the hours every month it can become a mess. If you have...
