    I just want a job

With 30 years' experience, you're selling yourself short just looking for minimum wage. Have you looked at freelancing and therefore presenting your services directly to businesses, rather than waiting for permanent opportunities to present themselves? And your portfolio link isn't working - I'd...

    Graphic Design Freelancer Lifestyle

It depends on the client. As I said previously, you have to take the rough with the smooth. I work mainly for larger retail management clients and that sort of workflow is pretty typical. If a business I do very little, or have done no previous work for, comes at me in that capacity, then yes -...

    Graphic Design Freelancer Lifestyle

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is absolutely NOT the way things work out. Your schedule is decided by the client, not you. If a job comes in and it's needed immediately, if you're not in a position to do it straight away, chances are you might not get the next job as it will be given to...

    Photoshop Beta - Firefly

No doubting that. But this has the potential to put a LOT of people out of work overnight. Our industry is definitely going to suffer fallout from this.

    Photoshop Beta - Firefly

So... What do we think of the latest Photoshop Beta with Sensei? Woke up to a load of YouTube vids on the subject and 2 hours later, I'm horrified! I'm all for progress, but this has the possibility of ripping the freelance image retoucher's reason for being to pieces!! 10 seconds to do an...

    Graphic Design Freelancer Lifestyle

NOT GPT - genuine response from a freelancer of 20+ years: So... long message to process, but I'll do my best. I am a designer/artworker, Mac-based using Adobe software, and working for the last 10 years from home. Here's a warning before you read on - this will contain stuff that you're...

    OKI C511DN Colour Laser

Just managed to get one of these at a markdown price. I'm trying to get it to print PDFs but having absolutely no joy with it whatsoever - OKI support is, well, there isn't any so it seems!!! I just wondered if anyone out there has one, whether you're using it for graphics work (the whole...

    Copyright & Ownership

Until about a year ago, I had a fairly sizeable client in the retail industry for whom I was doing design and artwork. Their marketing department took on the services of a local agency and from that moment on I was out of the loop. However, they now want me back on board as the service they are...

    Working Hours

That's a fantastic arrangement that works for you. But if I get a client ring up who's just secured a great deal on a last-minute press ad submission and the paper needs artwork by 12noon and it's 11.30am now, and in half an hour the ad needs to be produced, submitted to the client, amends made...

    Working Hours

Wouldn't it be marvellous if things really worked like that? As a freelancer, often, you are part of a pool. If you're not available to do the work, invariably someone else is. Also, client understanding is a difficult thing to come by - they want their work done. I'm currently sitting here...

Image resolution for big print ?

For the agencies who like to send me images that are 10'x3' at 300dpi(!) - yes really - it's quite a simple idea to grasp that the further things are away from you, the less the resolution needs to be. You could use a 300dpi image on a double page magazine spread on a 48 sheet poster if you...

    Working Hours

I find it impossible to regulate my hours. Some time I work zero hours a day, so far my record is 35 hours straight! Not being protected by a company work ethic means that you are purely at the mercy of the client - after all, they are paying for us to remain poor in this economic climate!

Policing copyright on a small scale...

...or rather, how to protect intellectual property. My Wife has, within the last few months, engaged herself in the starting up of a Wedding Stationery business. Nothing much to start with - just the part-time creation of personalised hand-made bits and pieces from 'Save the Date's to...

    2 monitors....

I use 2 screens and think it's mighty marvellous!! Still, I'd love one of the swanky new 27" iMacs with two Thunderbolt connectors and another Apple 27" on each side!! Just think of the glare!!! :D

    Cs 5.5....are you upgrading?

I think that the reason is a little more fiscal than that! In MY opinion, if it's a .1 upgrade or upwards, until it gets to 6, it should be a FREE upgrade. After all, I paid for CS5, which in my book, is read as 5.x!
