The effect of crowdsourcing and design competition sites

People might be stupid, but still they're not expecting their local mechanic to do repair jobs for £5. What can we as designers do to improve the image of the design industry? What can we do so people understand the value of good designs?

The effect of crowdsourcing and design competition sites

@hankscorpio I agree with you that a person that is only willing to spend £5 on a company logo doesn't value his/her business at all. I was once approached by a person who wanted a new logotype for his online business. The logo he already had was terrible. It looked like he had done it himself...

The effect of crowdsourcing and design competition sites

Thanks for the reply @scotty. You have interesting opinions. The theory that lesser experienced designers could get the opportunity to build their portfolio is interesting. I agree with you that this isn't normally the case. When I want to showcase my designs, I work on my own projects and...

The effect of crowdsourcing and design competition sites

Hello all. I think this is an interesting topic and would like to know what you as fellow forum members think. We all know about the sites where designers are either selling their design services at an underprice or spending their time on competitions where chances are slim that they will...

[Service] Designer looking for commissions -brand logos, businesscards etc.

Nice to hear. I'm looking forward to see the upcoming designs :)

    Coca Cola + Adobe + You [UPDATED}

That's interesting. They have increased the sum and removed the mention of "up to". So it's a once off. They must have read the constructive criticism in this thread and made the much needed improvements :)

    Least favourite fonts?

Another example is Papyrus. The name implies that it's inspired by ancient times, when people used papyrus to write down things. It has a somewhat ancient look. But mainly it comes across as being childish and outdated. I don't know which font is worst. Comic sans or papyrus? On a side note it...

I have seen your portfolio. I understand where you want to get. Quality is better than quantity. Also I like that you use mock ups. It gives a sense of how the logotype will look in different real life scenarios. Keep up the good work!

    Social network layout

Very good advice above by @hankscorpio. Was just about to recommend canva. It's free and you can create impressive designs for your project. The best thing is that it's easy to use and if you get stuck on anything, there are plenty of Youtube videos where you can get a guided walkthrough on how...

    Book keeper

As @Paul Murray has mentioned here, the quote seems fair. If you want your bookkeeping to be handled by a professional with the benefit that you can free up some hours each month to do things that you love, then go for it. :)

    Least favourite fonts?

Agree with what has been said about Raleway. It's a nice font but sadly the W's (which look like two v's intersecting each other) destroy the appealing part of the font. Is there an alternative to Raleway for those who love all the bits of the font except for the W's?

    Least favourite fonts?

@Jri Thanks for sharing the news article. It's indeed a warm story in a world full of bad headlines. :) It's always interesting to read about young persons with a passion to change the environment and the world to the better . Then it would be interesting to know what you people here on the...

Networking group: BNI - worth the fee?

Hello. An alternative to BNI is your local chamber of commerce. You can join them and then you will not be restricted to only one person from your industry. They have meetings so local businesses get to know each other. Also they have a membership directory on their website, so members are...

    Book keeper

Hello. I have read about your situation. I understand that you are a sole trader and want to be frugal. The quote you have got sounds good. If you want to make things easy for yourself and free up time for yourself, then I would recommend you to let a bookkeeper take care of the accounting. But...

    Least favourite fonts?

What do you people here think about Ecofont? It should be mentioned that it's a software but it makes any font look bad. Perhaps those who created it were obsessed with the many odd holes in Swiss cheese so they decided to introduce Ecofont. Or they had a mission to save the planet. Basically...
