I remember hearing this on Foundation: 'Artists solve their own problems, designers solve someone else's' which I like!

I agree with this in principal, however I think today the lines between art and graphic design are blurring. But art does not solve problems broadly speaking, if it is good art it may highlight a problem or a change in society. Solving problems is ultimalty upto the individual veiwing the work.
(I speak of art as 'fine art', conceptually driven)
Graphic Design is totally different from Art in my opinion. To me graphic design is about communicating with the audience, getting a message across, targeting a certain audience if needs to be and problem solving while using words, symbols and images as little as possible.
The thing that annoys me is when people relate you to art or think you just do whatever, bit of color here, picture there and thats it, but its simply not.
With out Graphic Designers the world would be dead or a very blank world.
Heh, at uni the lanes can be pretty blurred. I think a lot of us can come out at the end of a brief and wonder if what people have produced is art or design. In my opinion they share a lot of similarities. They often both address a problem, they both communicate etc...
Though i think it's a lot easier to pin down bad design or i should say unsuccessful design, than unsuccessful art.
I have a background in fine art (although I maily do illustration now) and I can say that this quote can also be directly related to fine art aswell. I am constantly having people expecting me to justifie fine art and why it looks like 'you just do whatever, bit of color here, picture there and thats it' ...but it's simply not that simple.
So maybe peoples views and reactions are not diffrent athough ultimaly the agendas are diffrent. Maybe this is the blurring; peoples reactions and views to a concept.
Just my view anyway.![]()
