Graphic Design Student Seeking Advice

Hi people

I've been trying to get involved in the online graphic design community recently and have just started posting on the mainstream boards. Then I came across this one and it looks like a really nice small community, and being UK based sweetened the deal.

I am a student studying a graphic design degree at the University of Northampton, just finished my second year and I'd like to share some of my work with you.

Hopefully everything is working, I'm a total newbie to web design at the moment so I've tried to keep it simple.

to quote a post i recently made on another forum

"I have just finished my second year at university (3 year degree) and would really like to start gathering some work experience before I graduate. Everything is going by so fast that I'm worried when I leave next year I will have a hard time finding a job without any work experience in the industry.

I am currently living in between Northampton and Milton Keynes which seems like a great location to commute to London however I have no experience commuting and I'm worried that I will not be able to afford the costs as I will most likely be working for free.

Does anyone have any advice?"

Thanks in advance

Adam

Hi Adam,

You have some nice work there

I was in the same boat as you are now. I realised at the beginning of year 2 at uni that I was not going to be able to get a job easily so I decided to go out there and get the work for myself. So I started my own business and then my university awarded me a business start up grant and support. Perhaps this is something that you could look into at your uni?

I also found a placement at a fab studio which really helped my practice. It was unpaid but they helped me with my travel costs and I was working on some really fantastic projects.

Perhaps you don't need to travel so far though, there is a huge agency in Northampton called Carlson marketing. You should definitely be trying to get in there if you can, they compete with the big ones in London. 24 in the top 100 agencies of 2008!

I've just arrived here too and have just finished my second year of Graphic Design at the University of Portsmouth. Thought this might be a good thread to pop in and say hello. :)

The summer is the best time to get some experience i've not long finished my HNC and have already got two jobs one of which is for the council! and the other is for a charity, just ask around! even if it is unpayed at least its up there! and you are getting some work experience! :)

good luck! :)

Just had a look around your site.
The design work is good,
however i would alter the way which the 'larger' images are viewed.
They are simply to big.

hey auntie p!

How did your 2nd year go? looking forward to finals?

Hey AuntieP, welcome to the forums

Thanks for the welcome. :)

Second year was great and I'm currently pondering my major research project - not quite sure what I'm going to do but have a few possible ideas. Need to speak with tutors and thrash out some thoughts. Also need to start working on my dissertation research because that will creep up on me before I know it.

Really don't know what I want to do after the degree though and am considering going straight in to doing a Masters.

Unfortunately currently suffering with swine flu (much better now and it was very mild but I've had to stay indoors whilst contagious, which is a pain).

Nice Work

Hi, cool work depending on what design your into, i phoned up several top magazines in london and began working for them for free. Ive taken a break from graphic design and now want to develop my own website, where do I start I want a simple but cool looking site. What computer do you use and what programs have you got, how do I go about getting the right programs?

Welcome, you have some great work.

I might have some quick turn-round projects in the pipeline, I'll keep you mind when they surface.

I like you style, keep up the good work!
