Social Networks

I don't use Facebook as much as I used to. But today I logged in to a hideous layout and what looked like ads just pushed in my face.

It has gone from a neat social network to a full on advertisement service. I'm fairly disgusted by it and probably won't use it any much longer, except maybe the mobile messaging app.

What do you think of the new design?

I'm on G+ and Twitter but not to socialise that much. I tried Linked in today and didn't see much use for it, except I can be looked up and people know where I work etc., which isn't appealing to me.

Haven't been around other social sites. What would you recommend as an alternative to the Facebook?

Seeing as I only ever had experience with Facebook until I deleted my account many years ago now, I have recently joined several other social networking sites and at the moment I would recommend Twitter. I find it the most useful out of all I have signed up to.

After the layout change I've stopped using it almost completely. It doesn't look finished, like the CSS hasn't loaded correctly or something. I tend to use Twitter for my business the most. I used G+ when it first launched, but nobody I know really uses it. Again, it's very useful for promoting blog posts though. I'm on LinkedIn too, but I don't really know what I'm supposed to do with it.

Now I tend to actually ring friends and arrange to see them face to face. I find it's a much better form of social networking :)

Ha yes that's true. It's far more convenient to send a group text or make a phone call or two.

I downloaded Snapchat the other day because I heard kids on the bus talking about how much cooler it was than Facebook - but like LinkedIn, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it.

I definitely won't be going back to Facebook - it looks like someone vomited a load of adverts onto the page.

I installed Snapchat once, realised I didn't know anyone else who had it, and promptly uninstalled it.

This is unheard of these days! Sounds exhausting lol. This is one of the reasons I 'quit' Facebook; people were using it as the first (and even only) means of communication. It began to replace making the effort to go and see friends in real life. I guess by seeing and chatting to friends online, people didn't feel they were missing out. Well I was the complete opposite, I hated the fact that someone would Facebook me, rather than call or even text. I hated the sentence; 'We'll Facebook each other.' I felt like the odd one out but the online social life wasn't and isn't my cup of tea. This is why I have taken so long to jump back on the social network train. Now I only use them for business.

Serious question though. What exactly am I meant to do with Dribble, Pinterest and Google+? I find it so difficult to 'stay active' on those platforms, as I don't know what I'm meant to do with them! Also, let's say I upload something work related to Twitter, I am then meant to upload that same thing to Dribble, Pinterest and Google+? I am so out of the loop with what I am meant to do with social networks sites and how to be active. But I am trying to market myself, SEO and all that, but I am kind of doing it all blind hoping that I am doing something right.

Linkedin is good for making connections and it is always helpful and interesting to see the connections people you know in business have with other people you know in life.

With Dribbble I tend to just upload revisions of things I'm working on, or just quick things I've designed for the hell of it, almost like a digital sketchbook. Then I tend to just share the dribbble link via Twitter (insert all applicable social networks here).

I did something recently that got a little attention via Twitter. I don't really request feedback or anything on dribbble since I don't really have enough followers to get feedback. I tend to just use it as a platform to say "hey, I've done this." I don't really use it to get traffic or increase my ego, it's mainly just somewhere I can keep snippets of ideas. I do find that it's a great place to find inspiration for UI design, though sometimes it's incredibly frustrating when the shot is too small to see what you need to :p

Honestly though, I'm really not that interested in the idea of 'social media' as a whole. Perhaps I'm getting old, but I see it as a young thing that eventually (hopefully) we'll grow out of.

Yes - an Adblocker is very much needed for it.

What one are you using? I can't remember what one I have and not on that computer right now.

I find Facebook a pain to use as it is basically full of adverts as you say. Its not really a social network. Twitter I like as you can get useful information depending on who you follow etc. Google + is still new so I say treat it like a blog. Dribble is for more of a portfolio of work you have done or are doing at the moment.
