Oh Samsung....

Congratulations to the winner for having designed an identity for one of the major consumer-electronics companies, with huge brand exposure, for a measly $325. Turns out they paid less than a dollar for each design too. Not bad, I can't beat that price.

What was the point of this? Publicity? Surely a company like Samsung don't need to rebrand (unless Apple are suing them for something else?), and if they did, surely they'd know to go to professionals?

According to the design brief, the competition did indeed ask for a new logo for the global organization, Samsung, but that the competition wasn't posted by Samsung themselves.

"This contest is not held by Samsung, it’s strictly our initiative. You are competing for rating points, medals (money), and most importantly prestige!"

The brief goes on to say that the new logo will be developed by celebrated Scott Bedbury, who had previously worked with such big shots as Nike and Starbucks.

So what the hell was the point of this? Publicity for another shoddy crowd-sourcing site, trying to trick people into think these sorts of sites are the way to go.

Sad.

Yeah, I can't actually figure out what the point of it is other than publicity maybe?

I wonder if I can crowd source building my new house? any builders out there fancy some great promotion? build me a house and I'll pay the one I think is the best about 10% of the market value for the work..........hmmmm yeah :(

so, what, he couldn't come up with his own? or is the idea to get a skivvy to come up with the idea, pay him/her peanuts and then pay Bedbury to tidy it up a bit and save some cash by not having to pay him to do the whole thing from scratch? perhaps not the intention but that's how it reads to me. And seriously? I don't mind the premis of a little bit of crowdsourcing for a fun way to generate some ideas if designers are just doing it for a laugh, but for people trying to make a living that's ridiculous. The money offered is frankly insulting. Who cares if samsung might use their logo? it's money that puts food on the table not ego boosts and pats on the back. grrr.

I'm guessing Samsung have no idea this competition has taken place, and they're employing Scott Bedbury to design the logo - I think the two things are entirely separate.

The project has nothing to do with Samsung or Scott Bedbury. It's simply a lame way of getting a) designers to their site and knock up a bunch of ideas for a worldwide organisation that will never get used, and b) potential business' to think such business' like Samsung use them for their own design needs.

Either way, quite pathetic.

The truth is that crowdsourcing sites don't usually deal with hi profile stuff like that, I've only ever seen small businesses posting comps on them and usually they do alright. tbh it's not the kind of jobs that I would even consider but for people just starting out it's a pretty easy way to bag your first client. If I didn't have enough to do already I might enter just for the sport! I'd probably get depressed if I lost though... I don't really think people trust crowdsourcing enough to float big contracts on those sites so maybe samsung have some suing to do!!
