iPad 3 / ios 5.1 - Resolutionary

Yeah i'm with you, my sisters got one too, just a big iPhone in my opinion.

We have a couple :icon_blushing: but all they are for is trying to sell advertising space good for putting the PDF Version of a magazine on and look flashy when we go to potential clients/customers etc but that's about it.

I'm with you guys. I can't say I see the point of them. I guess they're in between a smaller, more carry-able laptop, and a bigger more useful iPhone? Who knows. But you have to admit they're gorgeous looking things. I'd buy it for that reason alone.

I think there are pretty neat. Sure its just like a big ipod but its the size of it that gives app developers more screen real estate and now it actually has a decent resolution I think they are quite a tempting purchase, for me at least. Even for things like the Rightmove app - its a totally different experience to sitting down at a desk on the website and a million times better than sifting through a newspaper. I don't know what I would prefer though - a Macbook air having a full OS on it and still being very portable (but more expensive) or an new iPad. Or perhaps just save my money :p

Most of the sites I've viewed on an iPad clearly weren't designed with tablets in mind. I spent far too long zooming in and scrolling across to read stuff which quickly became annoying. This will probably change in time though.

I've heard from some people that they're useful for showing portfolios to clients, but I'd prefer to show them actual printed samples.

There is a really addictive "Where's Wally" app for it though :)

Really glad there are other designers who aren't ipad fans. They aren't really of use to me as they are more for people who want to find information/check email etc. They are no good for anyone that wants to create stuff. I am finding more and more clients wanting their sites optimised for ipads though. Pain in the @ss having to use fluid width and avoid javascript and hover menus. There are still more desktop pc/laptop users than tablet users at the moment but that's likely to change pretty soon.

Doesn't Javascript run on iPads/Phones?

I'm not sure that is true to be honest. I reckon you'll find a lot of tablets out there are either, already gathering dust somewhere or are used purely for entertainment. I.e. download some apps, films, music etc for a long journey and that's about it. I mean I don't know anyone who actually understands mobile data charges and a lot of people have a healthy distrust of public wi-fi hotspots so I see tablets as an entertainment device rather than something that will eventually overtake PCs and laptops. Of course audience is important in web design but, according to our analytics, we had 3 visits from iPad users in February (that's about 0.5%) and that isn't really enough to worry about at this stage.

I really like your branding by the way ahcstudio.

Apparently not. I could be wrong, i dont have one to fiddle around with. It wasn't working on a client's ipad, apparently you can turn it on through safari but even after enabling it it didn't seem to want to work. Since it wasn't mine i couldn't smash it up so i just handed it back with a smile and wished him luck :icon_biggrin:

My stats are similar, but everything i see and hear seems to indicate over the next few years tablets will overtake. I can't find any hard facts on sales though. I hope they don't.

Thanks for the compliment about branding, i wanted something a little different.. i also have a huge crescent moon filled with LED lights i take out and switch on at night:icon_biggrin:

I only had a few minutes with the ipad then gave up.. is there a quick fix to get it to work?

Javascript should work on iWhatever devices out of the box. Agreed that dropdowns aren't a great idea though! Is that what you were referring to?

Drop downs work ok so long as they aren't activated by a hover over. Not had any luck with anything javascript on ipad2 but as i said i really didnt have long to play with it. I did a quick google and found other people having javascript issues, tried a couple of their suggestions to try to enable it via safari but no luck.

Javascript has been supported on iOS for years. Initially it wasn't supported on the early version of the iPhone but that was years ago and it has since been supported. Javascript and HTML5 go hand in hand and Apple have long been flying the HTML5 flag. Still, improvements are always being made to the speed and performance of Javascript on these devices but that is the same with anything. Of course you can still get badly written javascript that could cause a website to malfunction or break a browser including the iPad's browser.

Sure does I'm sure it's only flash that they don't support.

Yep flash is not supported on iOS products by means of the flash player browser plugin. You can still export Flash/Actionscript applications and games into a native iOS application to be accessed with the app store since Flash has the iOS packager.

Going back to JavaScript: not every single piece of JavaScript that works on a desktop machine will work on an iPad, since for instance there is no concept of having a mouse on an iPad since it is basically a big touch screen - so some JavaScript functionality that relies on knowing the position of the users mouse will get confused when the user is using an iPad for example. This is one reason why developers often have to test andoptimise websites for this different type of device.

That must be it then, bad javascript lol. I should leave web design to my web designer.. i always break stuff:icon_biggrin:
