and then you'll need a plate making system, guillotine, folder, creaser.... are you sure?

...and a heck of a lot of regular customers to earn back your investment let alone start making profit. I am personally of the opinion that the print guys know what they are doing and I am happy to utilise their equipment and expertise.

Hi, I notice you're York based, did you study at York College or the Uni?

Some things to consider:

Saying you want to buy a printing press is a bit like saying you want to buy some transport, it's open ended and very non descript so what level of print are you intending getting involved in? Letterpress, digital, sheet fed litho, continuous feed? Do you have any idea of the difference between them or the jobs they do?

Do you have any experience in the print word? Can you take a design from pdf through the plate making process to setting up a printing press then complete the finishing process?

Are you aware of the other equipment required and the expenses involved?

What about premises? Anything other than a hand operated Letterpress will need a lot of space (and electricity).

Why not contact some of the local printers like The Max in Dunnington or Colour Options in Elvington and ask if you could go and have a look round or do a work placement?

I went to York College for my 2 year course.

With the presses at college we just used lino, which is the kind of thing im looking into as i enjoy doing it. from the lino i then scan it in on the computer and work with that image. Im fine for expenses. For the premises i would have to find somewhere in the house or in the garden somewhere, ( maybe buy some kind of shed or something to keep it in as it gets a bit messy, i am looking into buying a hand operated press.

I have been looking around for printers to do some kind of work placement, but a collegue is a freelancer in graphic design and she is going to look into getting me somewhere, anything other than york i would probably struggle with transport as i cant drive just yet

Lino printing!.... If my memory of the equipment at York College serves me correctly, I don't know if you would really call the equipment you've been working on, a printing press, more a washing mangle.

Is it design for print you're interested in specifically or are you looking for a placement working within an agency?

It matters as a placement within a printers will probably take you down a very different route to one with an agency.

Try and make contact with Jonathan at Scarlett Abbott, he doesn't like to miss out on the chance to scoop up young talent so will probably make time to look at your portfolio and see if he can find a few hours a week for you if he likes what he sees.

Ahh thanks thats a great help!

If i manage to get in contact with him shall i say who sent me to him?? :icon_biggrin:

Na, he wont remember me anyway so I wouldn't bother. Besides I think he'd probably be more impressed that you'd done this off your own back than someone sending you to him.
