Logo critique needed.

I'm designing a logo for a company called iNAUTICA. They sell sail yachts and in the future maybe motor yachts. This is my thinking so far. What do you guys think?

Cheers

Considering the probable diversification into motor-powered yachts, is the sail device the best solution?

As it is only a maybe for the future, I have tried to subtly visualise a bow of the boat as well. It was a bit of a tricky task because they are still not sure on what direction they will take in the future.

I do see the bow now it's pointed out but my first impression was definitely sails... perhaps something shaped a bit more like breaking waves at the bottom...?

Aww damn, I was about to say I really liked it but you raise a REALLY good point there.

Thanks Linzi, They dont actually sell motor boats yet and not 100% sure if they will so maybe it does have to be really subtle? As they don't sell them yet, I don't want to be sending the message that they do surely?

Thanks for the comments

I like the concept but feel the device maybe needs to be more like a sail, i'm thinking moth at the moment, too symmetrical maybe? Isn't one sail usually a touch smaller?

With regards to offering motorised in the future I don't think the logo has to depict every single product for 'sail' (see what i did there) and think the idea you have is fine, epecially if sail boats are their main product.

Just my thoughts...

Yeah one sail is usually smaller than the other, good point Bosshog!

'Tis true but there are many other ways to depict the concept of boating without sails (I only mention it as it's in the brief). That said, I think there's something quite neat to explore in the visual overlap between sails and a ship's bow: however, looking closer still, I now see the lower case 'i' in the centre which I think is perhaps cramming in a bit too much.

I can see this, however I do like the subtle i. It was the main focus really, and the sails are sometimes the same size in the middle of a yacht. But dont quote me on marine life the closest i've come to that is a paddle boat in Heaton Park lol

Has the client seen it yet? I ask because I drafted a logo for some canoe related stuff donkey's years ago (actually it wasn't a canoe but as near as damn it to my non-canoe/whatever-it-was oriented way of thinking) and they pulled me up on all kinds of technical/representational issues.

I really like this logo - I love the shape, and simplicity of the logo however I think the i may fade out if this was a lot smaller e.g. on a letter head or something like that.

Great Job! :icon_biggrin:

Not mad on the sails, bit obvious and too much detail with the dot and outer stroke. Have you thought of differentiating between I and NAUTICA by using different colours? I think the lowercase 'i' and the 'exclusive yachts' should be in uppercase if you want a premium exclusive feel.

Off the top of my head i'd be tempted to look at crafting the A's to give them a sail feel in a purely typographic execution. I find looking at fashion branding inspiring when trying to achieve that 'exclusive/premium' feel.

It looks good , your design is clean and simple and looks 'exclusive' and expensive , however i think that the sails are to bulky so perhaps you could adapt the sails to a more elegant shape and if the company were to invest in motor powered yaghts (no idea on spelling) they would still have sails :)
