please help me improve my site

fair point - i was clearer in another post - got muddled between them - the site isn't aimed at fellow professionals though and you have no idea of my position - thanks all the same :)

your concern is misplaced - but again thanks.

funny how my mumsnet post got me lots of interesting feedback on the design, and my graphic design forum post has feedback on if people would hire me or not, but i did ask for 'any and all feedback' - so it's fair game. i kind of expected you to chip in on things you knew about though - rather than casting aspersions over my professionalism.

still, again, thanks - your comments are appreciated :)
Um... think you might have a misconception about this forum. Most of us on here are professionals who run our own businesses so we also look at the way we present ourselves to potential clients etc, not just at the 'pretty stuff'.
Not to mention as designers we often have to brand companies, which is more than just a logo, and that is ultimately about presenting the client in the right way for their target market.

And you went to mumsnet...... you sure that was a good idea, they're usually just complaining about stuff.

Also I might not know what your current position is in terms of work but I do know what type of work you've been doing (it's on your site....) so I can make an assumption of your 'position in education hierarchy'

No we don't.

So can you answer the question: what is the purpose of the website?

no.

if you are representative of this community i will back away slowly...

thank-you for your time.
i will not be replying to any further comments in this thread.

I know he is no longer going to reply but I’m very confused about this thread.

He asked for a review but then doesn’t want a review. Most strange.

"I need some advice on how to improve my website design - I know, I'll head over to Mumsnet" Hmm...

ok - have calmed down and decided to explain before vanishing from your forum forever....

the site will (eventually) be used to encourage parents to book private tuition.

some people at mumsnet have been involved with ideas around what content would make someone want to pay the extra money for a good tutor
given that they are mums who have children who are tutored - their opinions on this are priceless and often insightful. they have informed me at almost every single decision in terms of tone, content and style.

they aren't gifted graphical designers, despite some having a keen eye, so i came here to get the viewpoint of graphic designers on the site

unfortunately, i now feel that i do not wish to contribute to your forum any further - beyond this message to explain the mumsnet connection.
i only brought it up because the forum poster i can't be bothered to look up the name of, decided to try and school me on professionalism.

god bless the internet,
thanks for your time,
peace and love.

You know the above would have been useful at the beginning......

Having said that, my views wouldn't have changed, if anything it makes my comments about professionalism even more valid imo.

But hey if you think mumsnet will get you better feedback go for it.

I’ve been a maths tutor for over 15 years. I know what works and what doesn’t.

keep it really simple, list the services you offer, provide trust marks and confidence builders, add full contact details and your picture (this is really important). When you begin tutoring add testimonials.

This sounds like solid advice.

At least you got some honest opinions about your website, whether you like them or not, and from what I can see, they're trying to help you as well.

Also, you spelt "Squirrel" wrong.

wasn't going to return here, but as you were kind enough to point out a spelling mistake i made, on christmas day, i thought i should post an update.

i've got lots of feedback from lots of places including here, mumsnet, tes and reddit.

i've made quite a few changes, same url https://adamclement.digital/

feedback on the design is always welcome - i will check back here eventually :)

i've also added a 3 round cipher challenge - i'd be happy for you to try it if you want

please try and refrain from letting me know what you think a portfolio is, or how to get work as a tutor - i'm not posting here for advice on anything other than graphic design.

many thanks,
adam.

If you only want feedback on the graphic design I still think you would be better with a traditional layout: Header and menu > Main Content > Footer.

And I still don't like the 8-bit font. But maybe that's just me.

And the clouds cover up the Quote for me (using firefox)

And the TOP action is slooooooow....

thank-you for commenting.

i'm sticking with the 8bit theme, but appreciate it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

the clouds should move - but will on occasion move in front of the quote. they should be transparent though. i tested this on firefox and it works for me, are you on an old or experimental version?

i'm toying with different scroll speeds, but think that 2 seconds is reasonable for the site - i appreciate this may seem very slow to some, but i am still canvassing opinion on this one.

thanks again,
adam.

No idea why you're bothering to come back here if you don't want to take any notice of professionals who do this type of thing for a living....

Maybe mumsnet will give 'better' feedback seeing as you found them so helpful last time.

As to feedback, even just on the 'graphic design' ... you didn't take any notice last time and seeing as my views haven't changed you're not going to do it this time... in fact you've actually made some of it worse.... especially asking for location information which I find incredibly intrusive on ANY site.

Why even have the animation. It doesn’t add anything of value.

The scroll does nothing for a fraction of a second then gets moving. I expected immediate then a fast scroll.

Personally, I think you are still missing the point of what graphic design is. It is not just about the way it looks. It is fundamentally about how it works. To ask only for comments about the graphic design, I am assuming you mean only about the layout? If so, that really Is only one aspect of what design is and you seem to want to put your fingers in your ears and not listen about the aspects other people are talking about which will materially affect the clear and effective communication of your intended message to your intended audience. The 8-bit thing may be something you like, but it doesn’t mean it will do the job you want it to.

It's still the bad layout and poor font choice that stands out for me, I'm afraid. It's just not easy to read or find my way around. With the 8-bit thing too, it all seems like
it's the year 2000 rather than 2020. To want a retro look is one thing, but you need to have sound graphic design to go with it. It is the epitome of K.I.S.S.
