Film Poster Design Feedback

Hey guys,

I’m trying my hand at designing movie posters. I need some feedback to know how to improve!

I started my design with the first version. I liked the concept of having a vast space scene but felt that the outcome was quite static and dull, not really engaging the viewer as much as I’d hoped.

So I developed it into a bolder style and I think the composition itself works, however I’m not sure if it looks professional enough and if it’s suitable for a film poster. I’m happier with this style as it’s more attention-grabbing and feels more modern, but I’m not sure it’s there yet. Does the vertical placement of the copy work? How can I improve it and make it more appealing to an audience?

Any feedback would be so helpful and greatly appreciated!

Thank you and have a great day :)

Sorry it was just the vid link drop - pretty much sums it up though.

I often see people asking for feedback on movie posters, but in reality, the format is set and it works as it draws most financial income for the film studios.

The format is what it is - unless you're Indie, then it's free reign.

Still, it's useful to study composition of movie posters etc. And nothing wrong with what you have done at all - it's quite nice. I like the starkness.

It reminds me of the Gravity movie

Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad it reminded you of Gravity because that was my inspiration! Before that, I’d taken some elements from the Life posters (astronauts’ faces) but I just thought it was too much and needed simplifying.

Yeah, makes sense about the format but it’s a shame how creativity is also restricted for the bigger films. I was kind of aware of the constant parallels in the industry but I didn’t think it was to this extent, that’s crazy.

Thanks again!

Well this will freak you out even more! https://thechive.com/2016/12/12/movie-posters-that-look-oddly-similar-17-hq-photos/

Yes, there is very little creativity that goes into movie posters. I guess they have a template for the genre of the movie and run with it.
