What are you looking for in a good website?

I would like to hear some opinions of what makes a good website in your opinion? I’m a Graphic Design student and this year I’ll be designing and developing my own website; it will help me a lot having different opinions from my own, so I can consider multiple options when I start wireframing :D Have a great day!

One answer doesn't fit this type of question.

Basically the answer depends on the type of website that is being produced.

Really great content that meets my needs. Easy to use navigation. Clear calls to action. Testimonials (if appropriate). Trust marks - especially contact details.

Don’t use animations, tiny fonts, dark backgrounds and visual gimmicks. Keep it simple.

the question was about general website, including navigation system, images colours. My website will show my work and more about me as a designer, but I’m more curious about overall websites

The answer I gave works for all websites.

It’s the content that matters above everything else. The layout, colours, imagery and fonts are all secondary. I work with Wordpress and a lot of testing shows people don’t care too much about the theme you use as long as the content is presented in an easy to read manner.

People expect to see a header area, navigation menu, main content area and footer. That’s all you need.

And no sidebars. People browse on tablets and phones, sidebars don’t work so well on these devices.

I was mainly replying to Levi

For a general answer, you're always looking to strike the balance between matching up with the business' goals and what works well for their target audience.

From a business point of view, the ideal site is one that sells or performs any other customer function. If you look in terms of design and taste - the ideal site does not exist, exactly the same way as there are no identical people. But there are certain criteria that bring the design of the site to the ideal: a single style, simplicity and harmony.
A real good site should perform clien, need to focus on your audiencet. Tasks with high-quality layout and easy navigation.

Good luck! Hope you'll do good!

The problem is what you find easy to use and easy to look at may not be what I find easy to use or easy to look at.

....and good website design
And that's the difficult part. What you think is good design may not be what I think is good design.

You only know if your website ticks all the right boxes if the site converts. You then spend 12 months adjusting the design to improve conversions. If your target customers want pink kittens then that what you need to give them - no matter how much it makes you cringe.

Key Elements Of An Effective Website
  1. Appearance
  2. Content
  3. Functionality
  4. Website Usability
  5. Search Engine Optimization
The most effective website will reflect best practices across all of these elements.
