Thoughts on logo concept

Hey, I'm new here but I wanted to dip my toes in to find out what you guys think of my logo.
The logo is for my freelance graphic design business called 'Ovinia' in reference to what the Saxons used to call the Island I live on (Isle of Sheppey),
Ovinia translated to 'Island of Sheep'; Also the cross behind the sheep head represents another part of the Island history, where it was an Island full of pirates for a short time.

So without further ado, my logo.. Thanks

Apart from sounding a bit like some kind of sheep food product, it looks fine. You might want to add 'DESIGN' underneath, otherwise it just looks like a sign
saying 'Don't draw on the sheep' or something :)

I think the sheep looks a little unrefined compared to the pencils, which are quite thick and bold.

Before I read your blurb I thought it was for some sort of farm animal drawing project. And for some reason I keep thinking of Olivio or Olivia not Ovinia (I had to keep checking to make sure I spelt it right).

I agree with @Wardy, you need a tagline or something to tell people what you do. Which would then make the sheep bit sort of irrelevant.

Thanks for the feedback, I hope this is clearer, although obviously there may be some occasion where a slogan cannot be used

What does that even mean?

The business name and tagline need to be in plain text so Google can index them (this is really important). The sheep's head then goes to the left of the words.

What do you mean what does that mean? It means I am supplying assets and not 'design', design is something entirely different, in this case they will supply their artwork, maybe logos, images or text and I will combine them into assets, like letterheads, posters and booklets etc. And actually, if I post this as an svg (as is my intent) google can read it. I'm not sure what you mean by 'The sheep's head then goes to the left of the words.' or why this would be important?

Keep it simple, i.e. 'design' or 'graphics', but in caps.

As explained above, this is not what I am doing, unless of course you'd class what I am doing as a subset of design, like UI or UX, then it is up for debate I guess, but that is semantics.

The very fact you have to explain this suggests it's maybe not as clear as you think it is. Would the local chippy or plumber understand the meaning?

And I know Google can index and SVG file but it doesn't properly breakdown the XML elements in the same way as a site name and tagline. Keeping it separate means you can have a longer and more explanatory tagline that you can edit until you find the one that works best.

If you separate the sheep head (the image) from the words (plain text) you end up with a much better structure. Each can then be managed using CSS to provide a better UX on all devices.

But if you just want a logo the way you have designed it that's cool. I just still think it's something to do with animals.

There are lots of businesses that have animals to represent them (lacoste and lloyds bank being two, I am sure they have a meaning but it is not immediately obvious and there is no need for it to be ), why would this one be any different? The logo is simply a promise to the customer, it does not need to be understood by everyone or anyone for that matter, but it does need to have relevance, in this case as explained above it is a representation of this local area, that is the promise, that this business will be set up to serve local small businesses that cannot afford large costs for proper design projects.

I put the slogan on there because you were complaining that you did not understand the logo, now you are complaining that the text is not separate from the image? Why would I post a piece of text on here separate from the image? It makes no sense...

Hiya, so I like the 'tuft' on the sheep's head, I think that works really nicely.
The pencils look really great, but I think the sheep's line art needs to be thicker especially on the nose. I like the last black and white one the most.

You misunderstood my post.

The bit I didn't understand was 'Digital Assets for Local Businesses'. The slogan or tagline shouldn't be part of the logo. It's a standalone reminder of what you do. It should be clear and easily understood - part of your marketing strategy.

You must know what digital assets are? They are not ‘designs’ they are actual products with their own graphics on them, this is not a graphic design service, it is closer to the service that a printers business might provide only with the extra of knowing design principles that ends up creating better results

haha thanks, i’ll have a look at the thickness there, I was trying to give it a hand drawn type of feel.

I think it looks better in black and white. But can be do more improve, to include more color, change shape, change design, 3d style etc.

You know what digital assets are but your potential clients won’t. You mentioned posters in an earlier post, your local businesses will never associate a poster with anything digital or it being an asset.

Which also means the pencils in your logo don’t really work. To me they could represent a company that does the graphics for me but you say that’s not what you do.

I’m not being deliberately awkward here. You are for opinions and as a potential client I’m just telling you what I feel.
