Insurance for freelance graphic designers???

hi all,

Im in the process of registering self employed as a freelance graphic designer and wondering if anyone could give me a little advice on the insurance i would be best getting please?

I originally thought public liability and Professional Indemnity but speaking to the insurance people public liability shouldn't really be necessary as i am working from home.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think I'm correct when I say that public liability covers you for people visiting your premises (probably not necessary) but also for any liability arising from your presence onsite elsewhere (may be useful). I also think, however, that you'll find that the two normally come bundled together.

For professional indemnity it's always been my policy (as a mainly print-based designer) to find the most basic, rock-bottom priced policy I can and to ensure that I never, ever sign off proofs, thus eliminating 90+ per cent of any risk (basically it's just window dressing if you organise your working practices correctly).

I have both Public Liability and Professional Indemnity and I also work from home. The reason being that if you visit a business and, for example, someone trips over your portfolio, you are liable. It sounds far fetched but can happen and if you aren't covered it probably will. It is VERY cheap and gives you peace of mind.

I use Hiscox and RBS and would be more than happy to give you their contact details if you want them.

PL is designed to protect you if you visit a clients site and - for example - you put your bag down and someone trips over it and tries to sue you - PL kicks in. PI is designed to protect you if you give advice or provide designs or plans to your client that lead to a financial loss on their part and they try to sue you - PI kicks in.

I have had a quote of £136.00 for both PL (£2,000,000) and PI (£50,000 Any one claim) from Finsbury Insurance Group. £250 excess. This appears to be pretty good, right?

They also offer Legal Expenses Insurance. Is that something i should get?

I'd still shop around. Cheapest isn't always best. Just take some time out and compare quotes.
