Hello everyone

I'm new to the forum and hoping to start a stationery business (cards, notelets, calenders etc...) and to screen print everything and hoping that somebody could help please?

I have everything that I need except for curing equipment as I need help with that bit.

I will be printing (max. 2 colours) onto A3 sheets of card that are either 270gsm or 350gsm which will then be cut into 8 x A6 cards.

How can I fully cure the ink (waterbased) so that when I'm packing and sending a stack of A6 cards to customers, the ink wont rub onto the card that is behind it? I'd like the ink to be 100% cured so that no ink can rub off onto any other card.

I was told that my heat gun could touch dry it but that it may be too hot for card and that I may have to air dry it. If that is the case, how long would the sheets need to be air-dried for?

I've been looking at heat presses and flash dryers but not sure if they'll be too hot for card.

Thanks

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some advice, in regards to making our own stickers / decals...

We're a small automotive performance parts company, who are looking at getting some stickers made of our logo. We'd be looking at getting a range of sizes, colours and styles (interior / exterior glass stickers), so looking into the possibility of purchasing a vinyl cutter (or printer?) to make them ourselves.

However, we know nothing about cutting vinyl or making stickers...

Our logo is relatively simple, consisting of one colour, and would like each part of the logo to be individual pieces of vinyl, rather than being cut onto a piece of transparent vinyl. To explain a little better, here's an example of some stickers, showing the vinyl pieces.

I might have the completely wrong idea of how these are created, so any insight would be great.

We would like the cutter / printer to be able to produce stickers up to about 600mm diameter (round logo), and about 2000mm length (web address), but generally they will be 50mm / 80mm diameter.

To give me a general idea of cost, what would the production cost of a 50mm sticker be, if we were to purchase our own cutter / printer?

We're looking at buying a cutter / printer that will do the job, with little maintenance. We don't want to buy a budget machine, but also don't want to buy an all singing all dancing, when we're only producing simple stickers. With this in mind, and bearing in mind we have no idea of the cost of such machines, our budget is approx £700.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Printing Advice Needed - A5 Flyer - paper and printers

Hey Folks,

Hey Folks,

This is my first thread and so Hello to All... this seems like a really great community to be part of - can't believe its taken me so long to find...

So, I have my first bit of freelance work creating a flyer and business card for a Hair Stylist. I'm very new to the world of printing for this kind of work (i originally started studying as a photographer so have a foundation of some printing processes etc).

The client wants a double sided A5 flyer that can be folded into an oyster / bus pass holder (3 half folds that gives 8 equal sections).

I've looked into the whole Z-card thing - and its not really what were after - personally they remind me of the 90's tourist information maps and also it would be extra unwanted cost.

So what i'm looking at is using (uncoated?) black paper stock for the design to be printed onto. The background colour is an off black 90k which due to the high amount of surface area would be better to have as the paper, then the secondary colour for most of the illustration is orange C - 0, M - 35, Y - 85, K - 0 and the text is white.

I need a paper thats thick enough to hold the colours without revealing through from the otherside but also thin enough to be folded and without the folds 'cracking'. I'm thinking a sort of rough/textured paper (a bit like the sugar paper is used to get at primary school).

Would i be best finding the paper myself and supplying to the printers - are there any decent (but not crazy expensive) printing services that could offer this paper along with the printing.

Am i right in thinking that as i'm after white ink for the text - it would need to be digital/litho/screen printed rather than offset.

From researching into the possibilities i'm feeling a little at sea by the amount of options and what would be the best direction to go in.
Any help / suggestions with this would be much appreciated.

Also - i was wondering who might be best to print (a) the flyers and (b) the business cards - Be handy if both can be printed by the same printers. For the business cards we're looking into letterpress / hot or stamp foil / spot uv / custom shape.... onto perhaps triple layer black card (with middle layer being the orange thats used in the flyer)
Is there a UK equivalent to RockDesign?

Sorry to throw so many questions out there and apologies if i'm getting things mixed up and using 'newbie terminology', i'm quite happy to research into these things but its also reassuring to have some advice and pointers from people that are in the know and have been doing this longer than myself.

So, Hello to you all again (now that im here i might start popping up a bit) and thanks in advance for any comments / suggestions.

Hi guys,

I've be struggling with this for a while and was hoping someone on here might be able to help. I have been asked to design a flag that has a metallic gold element 'printed' on it. I have contacted almost all flagmakers in the UK with no success (some of them do gold and silver print, but not metallic.) Furthermore, they are unable to advise whether I should be looking into gold leaf lettering companies or foil gold stamping to get the desired result. (see below) Does anyone have any ideas of where I can get such outdoors flag made?

Hi all

new to the site so be gentle with me!

I was wondering what paper others use for poster printing. Im looking at A1, and they will mainly be basic advertising posters for shops, indoor. Im thinking a semi-gloss/coated paper as they will be in colour rather than a matte? Ive been looking at the hP range, obviously cost will play a major part in the decision. Current clients want something that looks nice and shiny with a crisp colour but are not that bothered about anything more technical or too expensive!

Any recommendations greatly welcomed.
thanx in advance

Hi guys,

Just completed a logo design (below), and client wants large version for use on a banner. Obviously, when I increase the size, as majority of logo is vector there is no problem, however there is a dropshadow behind the logo which can only be rasterised a certain amount. Im still very inexperienced when it comes printing matters... should I keep the drop shadow as a raster or do I somehow make it a vector? Also, do I send the client many sized versions for various uses or will just one vector version of the logo suit all uses, since it can be scaled as needed? Please advise - ur help is always appreciated!!

Hi Guys,

Firstly please forgive my probably stupid question but I am having a great deal of trouble finding out "How" and "Where" I can find the below.

I am designing a header for my website and I wanted to assign the colour Metallic Gold to the Typeface header logo.
The problem is none of the colour codes for Gold in CMYK are good or Metallic. I have heard that I may be able to find this using RGB but again the colour code for gold isn't good or Metallic. Then someone suggested Pantone but I am not printing the header as it'll be online only so I was told that Pantone won't work either.

To be honest I am completely lost here about what to do to achieve this, and if I am honest I am confused about the differences between CMYK/RGB and Pantone.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Best
Our most recent transaction can only be described as disgusting! Initially the Discount Banner Printing website attempted to charge me £20 more than the value of the order. Following a 2 day battle to actually speak to someone, the error was rectified..... Or so we though until we discovered that they'd swapped one balls up for another and had posted the print to an address 20 miles away. On collecting the printed stickers we then discovered that only 1/2 the job had been dispatched (god knows why) and what had been sent was wrong! The DBP website requests artwork to be sent with 6mm bleed so we obliged. Unfortunately the company's incompetence department must have been in charge (again) as, rather than follow the company's own artwork specification, they chose to shrink the supplied files to fit the space!!?

Following on from this mess, the company have stopped answering calls or emails! (Amazing customer service).

We've now also traced the other half of the order to the same wrong address (delivered 2 days later) and equally incompetently produced. This time the artwork is about the right size but the cutting is out by 20mm!!!

Has anyone else had the misfortune of stumbling into this shower of shite?

Hi Guys,

Can anyone shed some light on what DPI i require images to be for large format printing.

Got an advertising board 400cm x 122cm which my clients wants to place images on, I'm thinking of a selection of photographs roughly around 60cm x 60cm. What DPI will these have to be?

This will be viewed from roughly 5m on a train station platform. I know 300 dpi is for close reading/viewing.

Also if i wanted to go even bigger with my images what dpi is recommend, i have found the article below with a conversion chart is this a good enough guide?
Cheers Guys,
